Pulau Mataking Review : I travelled to this resort for a Dive holiday with a friend from the UK in March 2011 and we selected this resort based on comments on this site and other research done on the web. On our arrival in Tawau we were greeted by Staff from the resort and quickly escorted to a mini bus which took our overland on a 1 hour trip to the Jetty at Sempora. ( This resort uses a small jetty opposite the Sea Breeze hotel ) after 20min or speed boat arrived and we were on our way to Mataking Island. The ocean around the island was flat, making our arrival to the island quite spectacular. Check in was handled quick and efficiently, after a quick overview of the island we were taken to our Chalet. We opted for a Premium deluxe chalet which is located just behind the Dive Center. The room was large and bed’s comfortable and a very good AC. If you are looking for an idyllic dive break then this is the place. My girlfriend and I stayed there over the last 5 days of April hoping it would be the ultimate remedy for our stress levels thanks to our jobs back home....it was!! The beach king chalet was clean, supremely comfortable and peaceful. I recommend these rooms if you want a bit of chill time in between dives but all rooms looked great. The food was great and service attentive. The drinks on offer were pricey (as they always are in those places) but my girlfriend did say the piña coladas were best on tour so there you go. But all that aside it the actual island that matters and it is really truely amazing. The sand bar out to the minor island is well worth walking along to really get that deserted island feel. The most important thing of course is the diving and it's why we chose mataking. We stayed at Myne resort for 2 short nights to do some river trips along the Kinabatangan, booked through Dive DownBelow, and couldn’t have been happier. The chalet was spacious and almost brand new. The view from our balcony was stunning, straight up the river. There was air con. and fan, with bottled water supplied. Bathroom was fine – roomy but the shower wasn’t the best. The bed was comfortable and there was a flat screen TV with cable (which was not always available). The meals were fantastic and the cook was more than happy to take special orders. The meals area was very spacious and a great place to relax and meet with other travelers to chat about our experiences. We took the morning and afternoon river trips and saw plenty wildlife; elephants, proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, long tail and pig tail macaques, crocodiles, a few different species of hornbill including the rhinoceros, storm stork and lots of other bird life. Zaharah Hotel Apartment is operated hotel/serviced apartments in Api-Api Center in Kota Kinabalu. It's located at the same block and area as Paramount Service Hotel and Apartments - it seems that the management has rented out some units to be rebranded as Zaharah Hotel Apartment. A 30 to 40 minutes drive via the old Penampang-Papar road to the southwestern part from the Kota Kinabalu will bring you to the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park. Situated about 25km from the city centre, this park has recently been officially open for the visitors this year. The park is managed and operated by Sabah Wildlife Department under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment. While most of the visitors viewed it as a zoo, it is actually a small wildlife rehabilitation centre. The 280 acres of land hosted nearly 100 species of plants, birds and wild animals. The botanical garden which is located near the end of the zoo is managed by Sabah Forestry Department. Gomantong Hill is the largest limestone outcrop in the Lower Kinabatangan area, and contains at least nine caves. For centuries, the Gomantong Caves have been renowned for the valuable edible birds’ nests made by two of the four species of swiftlets that roost in the caves. During the harvesting months, visitors may be able to witness the birds’ nest collectors in action. This is an age-old tradition and the trade history of birds’ nest spans several hundreds of years. Gomantong consists of two cave complexes, Simud Hitam and Simud Putih. Simud Hitam is the main cave, a five-minute walk from the Registration Centre.
